NIST IAL2

This policy is available to anyone 18-years or older and is ideal to increase user adoption, decrease false negatives, and detect fraudulent identities by malicious applicants. IAL2 follows NIST standards to limit KBA methods and replaces them with devices and biometrics, introducing the need for either remote or in-person identity proofing.

Verification flows

Today, ID.me has over 51 million members verified at NIST IAL2 with our network continuing to grow by the thousands daily. ID.me’s IAL2 solution is omni-channel, featuring expedited preverified, online self-service (Unsupervised Remote), video chat (Supervised Remote), and In-Person (IPV) flows.

The Unsupervised Remote workflow is fully automated, and how 85% of new members choose to verify their identity, typically within 5 minutes. The remaining new members are either routed through the Supervised Remote workflow to complete verification with an ID.me trained video chat agent (Trusted Referee), or choose to verify in person at one of more than 700 locations across the US.

Online self-service (unsupervised remote)

Aligning with NIST 800-63-3 standards, ID.me validates and verifies one piece of strong evidence such as a driver’s license, passport, or passport card, and two pieces of fair identity evidence such as a mobile phone, utility bill, or financial account.

Video chat (supervised remote)

Video chat verification with a human agent allows individuals who may have trouble completing the self-service process to verify their identity through a live video chat with an ID.me member support representative.

In-person identity proofing

For those who prefer to verify their identities in person, ID.me offers kiosks at more than 700 convenient locations nationwide.

Preverified

Over 50 million Americans have already verified their identities to NIST IAL2 and AAL2 while using ID.me at various federal and state agencies. These users simply need to login, complete MFA, and provide consent to release their verified identity.

Use cases

Federated identity

A great option for public sector customers who may have a legacy IAM platform or IdP, Federated Identity makes it easier for users to access services using their ID.me account. Current use cases include the IRS and VA.gov on the federal level, and Kentucky and Idaho at the state level.
