KBA

KBA, or Knowledge-Based Authentication, is a security process that verifies a user’s identity by asking them to answer personal questions. With KBA-R, or Knowledge-Based Authentication Replacement, simple questions are replaced with a strong piece of identity verification. The KBA policy is ideal for integrations with low incentive for fraud and available to anyone 18-years or older.

Verification flows

Phone verification

Uses browser-based APIs to measure the tenure of an identity to the phone number as well as contextual, behavioral, and device data to verify users and prevent fraud.

Document verification

Delivers a guided UI instructing users to upload an official document, such as a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or passport card. After the image is captured, ID.me resizes the file and authenticates the document.

Human in the loop

ID.me has teams of virtual support agents that can activate to backstop automated document authentication to ensure an even smoother user experience while mitigating any potential bias.

Preverified

Once verified, users can log in with their ID.me credential anywhere ID.me is accepted and share their credentials in a matter of seconds.

Use cases

As of November 2023, ID.me has verified the identities of over 51 million pre-verified members with KBA-R or higher, with the network continuing to grow by the tens of thousands each day. Since ID.me takes a network approach, these pre-verified members can now securely access offers, benefits, and services in seconds, and new members can complete verification just as fast using the least amount of information required to verify their identity.

Hotel check-in

ID.me currently powers digital identity verification for contactless check-in at two of the top five hotel & resort casino operators in the US (MGM Resorts and Wynn), performing millions of ID validations per year for guests arriving from multiple countries.

Age verification

You have a website and would like to gate access by integrating ID.me to the landing page.

Resident verification

You have a website and would like to restrict access to allow only current residents by integrating ID.me to the landing page.

Within account

You would like to enable users to verify their identity through ID.me and link their credentials to an existing account within your application. After logging in, users complete a quick verification via ID.me. Once verified, ID.me returns attributes and unique identifiers to support a secure 1:1 account match.
