Supported Legal IDs
The Legal ID types accepted when ID.me asks a user to present a government-issued ID.
Overview
ID.me Legal ID verification accepts government-issued IDs from the United States and from 230 other countries and territories. This applies to any ID.me flow that asks a user to present a Legal ID, including policies that use document-light verification.
Users are not limited to U.S. Legal IDs. Which types are accepted depends on the issuing country or territory, and no single type is accepted everywhere. Check Country coverage before assuming a given Legal ID will be accepted.
Supported Legal ID types
ID.me accepts the following Legal ID types:
- Driver’s license - A U.S. driver’s license from any state, or a driver’s license issued by another country or territory.
- Passport - A U.S. or foreign passport, in either book or card form.
- National or state ID card - A U.S. state-issued ID card, or a national ID card, for example Germany’s Personalausweis or Spain’s DNI.
- Permanent resident card - Includes foreign residence permits.
- Travel visa
Each type is accepted only for the countries and territories listed in Country coverage. Acceptance varies by type, so a country that accepts one type does not necessarily accept the others.
Country coverage
The following table lists the Legal ID types ID.me accepts for each issuing country or territory. A blank cell means that type is not accepted for that issuer.
This table covers passports, ID cards, driver’s licenses, and resident permits. It does not show travel visa coverage.
